The Difference Between Art Advisors and Art Consultants

Ec Rendering - Art Advisor Vs Art Consultant 1

Both art advisors and art consultants play a major role in securing fine art for collectors, interior designers and commercial developers but their roles differ. An advisor will help to expand a client’s collection or negotiating prices on their behalf. They typically have expert insight into the art market and will work closey with galleries to acquire artworks.

Art consultants are more of a project manager as they understand interior designer and architect project scopes and details the project needs to succeed. They may have a curatorial background giving them the ability to speak a similar language as a spacial designer.

Below, I’ll go into the differences and overlaps between the two positions.

What is an art advisor?

An art advisor provides expert fine art advice to collectors or institutions to help them build and manage their art collection. Their relationship continues over time to create a cohesive collection. An advisor understands how to source art for investment purposes and will have expert knowledge of a specific art movement such as Impressionist or Classical. Art advisors will perform extensive research on their client’s behalf and keep a close eye on the art market to find new works.

What is an art consultant?

An art consultant deals primarily in contemporary  and traditional art made by living artists. They often commission custom pieces for the private or public sector clients. Art consultants will know about emerging artists, public art, corporate art, hotel art, yacht or cruise ships as well as residential art needs. An art consultant should be a good listener and provide an abundance of advice to their clients. They will research art options that fit the client’s specific needs and, if necessary commission bespoke artwork. But a consultant does not stop there. They also offer turnkey art consultancy services, including printing, framing, and scheduleing plus supervision of the installation.

What’s the difference?

Art consultants specialize in finding and/or commissioning art for specific projects, both private and public, focusing on immediate needs and project objectives using working artists and design studios. Conversely, art advisors work with private individuals to build and manage art collections over time, and are experts in specific art periods or genres of artists from the past.

How to choose?

Whether you need an art consultant or art advisor will depend on your end goal. For contemporary or traditional art or custom projects, go with an art consultant that is intimately involved in the current art markets. When you or your client is interested in an example 19th-century impressionist landscape, then finding the right art advisor who specializes in acquiring art in a particular time period is better.

Consultants and advisors have their own area of expertise so find one that you trust who matches your own personal taste or project scope.
