This artwork, made collaboratively by R&D (Diane Rosenblum and Joe Doyle), extends the bounds of abstract painting, using computer based manipulation to push, pull and warp the picture plane. R&D paintings make viewers want to reach out and touch the canvas to see if what their eyes tell them is real. These colorful paintings are a new development in abstraction, bringing the illusionary world of computer-derived space to hard-edge painting. R&D artworks intrigue and delight people with their stripes that buldge, ripple, and twist subtly encourage new ways of thinking and being. The title, Gillespie, is after Dizzy Gillespie, one of the many artists Diane listens to in her studio.
Diane Rosenblum’s rigorous, beautiful and intellectually provocative work is widely shown in gallery, museum, and design spaces. Over the past decade she has produced five major series, each solving distinct conceptual and aesthetic problems. In the year before the Covid shutdown, her work was shown in Brooklyn, Berlin, London, Sun Valley, Aspen, San Francisco, and at St. Mary’s College Art Museum in Moraga, CA. She was recently an artist in residence at the Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, Germany, at the Centre for Substructured Loss in London, England and at Centrum in Port Townsend, WA. Her work is in 20 museum collections, including SFMOMA and LA County Museum of Art.More About Artist
