The other day I posted on Instagram: Lessons in Classical Painting by Juliette Aristides as being one of my favorite art books. Today, I wanted to share this book and also her Lessons in Classical Drawing. These beautiful books are not only instructional but are a joy to read. Many times the only function of an art book is to observe and copy learning lessons of both past and present masters. These books you will want to read. Juliette Aristides is not only an accomplished artist but she can write and at times it is like poetry. Very inspirational and for all skill levels, she weaves some of her personal history and struggles and includes beautiful artworks (not only hers but other artists, too). Even though these books are geared toward the realist artist, I find that she touches on many principles that can benefit and enhance those whose genre is abstract. I will end with an excerpt from the afterword in her Lessons of Classical Drawing: ….”The artists who make a contribution are not always the ones who come out of the gate the strongest, youngest, or most promising. They are the ones who do not give up. Most people, for whatever reason, don’t make it because they quit. Struggle, doubt, fail…but get back up and keep going”. aristidesdrawingaristidespainting
