Tell us about yourself! Kathie Bugajski My Journey I grew up on the east side of Detroit, in Michigan, in a quaint neighborhood during a time when you knew who your neighbors were. The neighbors were connected to each other. We all played ball in the summer and skated on our homemade ice rinks in the winter. I love the out of doors, camping and all that goes with it. I would rather take a walk in the woods than anywhere else. Nature has always spoken to the deep part of my soul. I feel close to God and His creation when I’m there. These elements molded me into who I am today, loving people and nature. In 1983, I married Sam and together we reared two children; Samuel and Kristie, whom I homeschooled. Teaching them reignited my interest and love of art. After they entered public high school, I actively started making art, teaching young students and taking college classes myself. I completed my studies at Wayne State University in sculpture and painting. “Description of My Work” In my water color painting entitled, “In This World” a collage was first carefully constructed from photographs, torn paper and water color paints. Working from real objects helps to create a sense of depth and feeling that is usually only captured by working from still life or life, and is why this collage was made, to paint from. I wanted this painting to have a heaviness and bleakness to embody the emotions that the homeless and hungry experience. To achieve this, a dark gray wash background was laid down. The large image of a hand appears to hold each scene carefully. The repeating image of a hand serving in the soup line not only represents God’s involvement in the world collectively, but expresses how he moves on us to prompting us to serve our fellow man as an extension of His love and care for them. As an emerging artist I wish to enlarge my body of work by incorporating the human figure in my compositions. In addition to water color I will be working in oil paints, clay and metal. Working this way allows me to cross over into the use of several mediums and disciplines of painting and sculpture. “God's Spirit” is one such sculpture. I used the lost wax method to cast bronze wind. Ferric Nitrate was applied with heat to obtain a golden brown patina to the bronze. The sphere sits cradled within the wind of Gods presence. Ammonia vapors created the blue patina used to represent the earth's color seen from the heavens. “Themes of Your Work” My work incorporates both representational and abstract content allowing a combination of expressions and freedoms. I have chosen to work with the human figure because that is our world. How we work, play, and think, everything revolves around us as human beings. We are fascinating created beings! I strive to capture the expressions of an individual to convey what they may be thinking to entice the viewer to look deeper into the soul of my images. I want the viewer to find themselves somewhere in the picture plane or sculpture, relating to a feeling or connecting to the theme being presented as in “In This World.” Many questions arise within our daily lives, such as, is anyone here to help us get through a difficult day? Why am I here? Who really cares? The phrase, “One picture is worth a thousand words”, wrote, Fredrick Barnard, is an artist’s spring board! I hope to express in “one picture” and with “one look” what may require reading an entire book to accomplish. Some human conditions are of the spirit or soul, which are difficult to represent. I feel that abstraction of an object can help to bridge that gap and allow the artist to express these deep emotions and convictions of the soul freeing us to see and feel more clearly. Being out doors inspired “Worship in the Woods.” From a 2" X 4" board I created a sculpture that, hopefully, conveys the feelings I have when in the woods of being in God’s presence . Trees seem to lift their branches in glory to God. His beauty is seen all around you in this environment. In the reflection of a pond or pastures of flowing tall grasses you see His handy work.
