Tell us about yourself! Jerome Patryjak, from the northeast corner of Detroit, grew up loving the city. Family excursions were to the city center to the Detroit Institute of Art, the Main Detroit Library, the Detroit Historical Museum, and to Belle Isle park for the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Aquarium, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and gardens, to Dearborn for the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, and to Royal Oak for the Detroit Zoo. Nearby Eastland Mall, then newly built, was an environment filled with murals, mosaics, fountains and sculpture including Marshall Frederick's Lion and Mouse. He recalls his Dad pointing out that the Spirit of Detroit statue was by the same person, a Detroit artist and local hero. Art, design and creativity was everywhere. After earning a BFA from Wayne State University Jerome was invited by Edgar Yaeger to join the Scarab Club, but instead decided to go to Illinois to earn his MFA at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. On return to Detroit he set up a studio as an illustrator, designer and art instructor. Joining the Michigan Chapter of Artist Equity he developed community fine art exhibitions and worked in promoting legislation for the arts. Exhibitions with the MCAE included juried shows in Detroit and Lansing, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. Art instructor positions include as teacher for Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit, as a mural instructor for the City of Detroit Council for the Arts Summer Youth Employment Program partnering with Steve Pablo Davis, for various Art and Community Center programs, as an artist for the Pontiac Public Schools Art in the Schools program, and at Baker College teaching graphic design courses. At the Pontiac Art Center he worked as House Manager, in a year developing and installing over twenty art shows and events. He was responsible for the day-to-day running of the facility including graphic design, printing and publicity. He left the PAC for the opportunity of Resident Artist with the Williamston Community Schools, a MACACA and NEA program. With partners he formed The Mill Gallery in Milford, Michigan, which set over fifty shows of fine arts and crafts. Followed was a career in commercial exhibition design, with his first commercial project the Holiday Inn Corporate Visitor Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Recently work includes graphics for the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant museum and the Detroit Zoo. A personal passion is book design and illustration. Recent publications include Scarab Club Member Annuals volumes 5, 6, 7 and 8, She Sparrow, a novel, Visiting Miss Emma and The Bridge to Anywhere, children's books, and various artist catalogs. Finally joining the Scarab Club for Thursday Sketch Sessions, he helps out as needed as a session moderator. He became involved in the annual Noel Night and other volunteer opportunities including design of the aforementioned member annuals. He joined the Board of Directors in 2015 and served as Board Secretary for the 2018-19 session. Currently he is sharing a studio at the Scarab Club for paper works and continues at the Art In Motion Studio for clay sculpture.
