HI I am Debbie La Pratt, the creator of Art Is In Market, has been an artist for over 35 years. For many of those years her holiday seasons were spent traveling to art shows every weekend.
"Like many other artists," I remembers, "I often worked two or more shows each weekend during the holidays. Art shows can be fun and rewarding, but selling my artwork in this way came with a high price in terms of time traveling, long days, setting up, tearing down, and missing being with family and friends during the holidays."
"This was on my mind as I walked through a local mall before the holidays back in 2005. I wondered … what if I could create a store for all my artist friends during a couple of months through the holiday season." Acting on that thought, I contacted the Laurel Park Mall. To my surprise, they loved the idea and offered space for two months. "From there, it was easy," I said. "I called all my artist friends and invited them to end their holiday travel and try something brand new … display their work locally in aa major mall for 2 months and work in the store a little bit to help sell everyone's work."
As customers came into the gallery and were told it would be closing in January, the overwhelming response was, "NO NO AND NO PLEASE STAY, you can't, we love this store: every time we walk in we see something new and different!"
As a result, the contract was renewed for three months, then another three months. Now it has been over 15 years and there are multiple Art Is In Market stores that operate year-round in lower Michigan. I attributes the success of the stores to the hand selected makers who have a passion for their art and to sharing Michigan made art with everyone.
"When we opened Art Is In Market over 15 years ago the idea was simple, allow the public to see Michigan made art and the Makers behind the work. As a result you will always meet at least one of the artists when you arrive. Our commitment is that each and every client is able to enter the shop and experience Michigan art from a wide variety of mediums and styles. We promise that you will not only love your piece, but you will always feel warm and welcomed in to our studio. We are so committed that you love your piece that sometimes clients are allowed to take a piece home and view it in the space to fully decide if it right for them. Very proud to say we have make it thew the hard times with the loss of my husband to the great times how artists step up to help each other it is amazing.
