How to Build an Art Collection That Speaks to Trauma Informed Design

Biophilic design integrates natural elements to improve health, well-being, and productivity.

Embrace Creatives was thrilled to be the official art consultant for the Interior Design Exchange, a new event that debuted during Detroit Month of Design. Hosted by Interphase Interiors and Humble Design Detroit, this half‑day convening brought together Detroit’s design community and the design-curious to explored how interior environments can advance dignity, circularity, and community impact.

When I research artwork for exhibitions and clients, I have either a theme, brand or a story to use – a North Star, if you will, and this Interior Design Exchange event was no different.  Because, along with worksplace, hospitality and sports properties I build collections for medical properties and senior living facilities, I have experience sourcing fine art that offers engagement and joy while also supporting trauma-informed design scopes.  

This Detroit Month of Design event centered around dignity by design which is exactly how I choose artwork for my clients – thoughtfully with care to the emotional environment and the people who live and work there.  In addition, the artwork I curate is an asset, *not* an accessory because its very presence helps to alleviate stress and improve ones mood.

Artwork speaks to the heart and soul. Because the physical environment affects an individual’s sense of identity, worth, and dignity it is imperative that artwork selection supports the community being served, and is considered part of the space, and any treatments offered.

BIOPHILIA: Biophilia means the natural, inborn love of life and the living world. The word comes from Greek roots meaning “life” and “love”. It describes the deep, genetic urge of humans to connect with nature, animals, and other living things. Research shows a 30% increase in a number of guests in a property that includes biophillic art and natural materials.

TRAUMA INFORMED DESIGN: Buildings have the power to heal its inhabitants and guests. For properties that cater to vulnerable populations—like healthcare facilities and k-12 education—designers can use thoughtful fine art to mitigate adverse emotional reactions and promote well-being.

BUILD AN ART COLLECTION FOR SAFETY AND DIGNITY

• Views of Nature: Research shows that the brain connotes landscape, floral and botanical artwork to spending time around nature which is associated with increased positive impact and comfort.
• Color Psychology: Color psychology also factors into fine art collections. High-energy colors like reds and yellows should be used sparingly in favor of calming tones like blues, greens, and purples.
• Distraction Imagery: Distraction Imagery can positively draw focus away from triggering anxiety and fear. This concept can include interesting graphics, engaging artwork, and calming colors to alleviate stress and improve mood.
