No. 3, from Structures

This is the third work from the series titled Structures. All the works are paintings + collage on paper, inspired by the relationship between human and natural elements of structure. In the book “Lame Deer: Seeker of Visions“, the main character talks about the ‘squareness’ of the western world, how prevalent it is and how it’s perhaps contributing towards an imbalance because it isn’t a shape found in nature. You’ll notice our houses are square, credit cards, devices, TVs, walls, buildings, etc. He points out that the circle, however, is found in nature and creates more balance with the natural world around us. The process for creating these works explores this idea. The bottom layer is full of squares, straight lines. The collage elements break away from that and the white circle over top completes the ‘transformation’. In the end, the works are shapes, lines, colors and whether or not it’s aesthetically pleasing. But the process for creating these works emanates from looking at the structures of society and nature thru art.
