This work was part of a series “Breathers” comparing us as people with industrial containers and objects – such as oxygen tanks used in manufacturing plants. This work explores how influences affect us as people and the resulting distortion of influences as they are passed through lineage and time. We take in and pass influences mirroring how tanks are filled and emptied, eventually decaying and distorting from their original form to something different and changed.
STATEMENT
Grant M Brownlow utilizes industrially derived imagery, layered in collage-like compositions to explore ideas of influence, containment within experiences, and decay through continued repetition of ideas or forms. The elements within his work are derived from personal influence including manufacturing environments, automotive racetracks, and objects which are repeated or mass-produced. These images are often created utilizing printmaking techniques such as aerosol stencils and silkscreen which originated in industrial manufacturing settings and mirror the state of our heavily industrialized world.
Grant’s main interest lies in the construction or deconstruction of influences, their origins, meanings and the resulting effects on us as people, places, and cultures. This work confronts how these influences are passed and recycled through both people and the cultural or physical environments we inhabit. These influences are inherited from those before us and in-turn passed onto future generations, causing gradual deformations through time and repetition. These distortions caused by repetition push ourselves and our environments to degrees which are structurally unsustainable and culturally incompatible. This repetition causes the decay of ideas, values, people and places, calling attention to unsustainable industrial and economic growth, and the distorting nature of our influences and resulting identities.
