Part of the 2022 Fall Smalls Collection. The days are getting shorter. When the “ber” months begin and Autumn arrives, so do the early sunsets. And the colors of these sunsets are unlike those the rest of the year. Cool pinks and lavender in the evening. It caught me off guard this year. While I was taking in the enchanting colors of the turning leaves, my attention was drawn instead to their blushing back drop. The early sunset. *This small annual collection pushed by abstract practice in a new direction. Abstract expressions are visual representations of intangible things. Feelings, impressions, fleeting moments, ideas. By floating gold leaf between layers of resin, like insects preserved in amber, these pieces are forever preserving desperate and precious expressions.
My work seeks to be a safe place driven by love and grace. It unpacks relationships between humanness and our natural world. I am endlessly inspired and intrigued by other art forms. My work often becomes a visual love letter, poem, a song or a prayer. The creative spirit is not limited to the single material by which it reveals itself. Poetry, painting, music and prayer are beautifully connected. My work fuses these vessels of human expression together. Saturated with faith, my work is listening to the music and poetry surrounding it. It reveals this underlying truth and gentle understanding that we are not alone.
Where I grew up has a particularly rich impact on the subject matter of my representational paintings. The lifestyle in my hometown is slower, the landscape seems to set still both time and people. In a day and age that feels like we are rushing through our days and forgetting to be present, I want to remind us of a place where “rush” doesn’t exist – there is only the fields, the farm, and the creeks. This idea of paying attention to small still moments carries into my abstract practice as well. When I’m painting, i’m listening. How are the colors interacting? what are they saying and why?
Whether sage is talking to mustard or a green leaf with an endless sky, this work is about paying attention.
