Sweater Weather no.4

This oil on canvas painting is inspired by my time spent in magical Iceland. The landscape as well as the sky pattern are both entirely hand-painted. The pattern is inspired by the Icelandic Lopapesysa, the traditional Icelandic wool sweater style. After visiting Iceland for the first time and traveling around the entire country in two weeks, I became obsessed with finding affordable ways to return to the peaceful, majestic, remote volcanic island. Over three years and two more trips, a total of 5.5 months were spent in Iceland, many of which working at an adorable Belgian cafe tucked in the Westfjords, plein air painting in my downtime. I was deeply moved by the vast natural beauty, genuine culture, and stunning lighting moments and have painted my Icelandic landscapes since.

STATEMENT

The landscape paintings were born from my lengthy travels, with patterns inspired by the tapestries of the cultures inhabiting the landscapes depicted. Studying the weavings and rugs I reference continually teaches me about the many layers of symbolism behind the shapes, colors, and repetition in patterns. The gradients, oil pastel drawings come entirely from within, capturing fleeting moments and are entirely emotion-based. With them, I seek to aesthetically soothe the anxiety we can all experience, and provide a moment of calm to rest ones eyes. The portraits of my friends, and fellow artists Samah and Aya are an ongoing series dedicated to celebrating various people in my life and their cultural backgrounds. I'm happy to accept portrait commissions, reach out for further info.
