The process of pulling color combinations and shapes from saved photos and notes to create an interesting composition is where I begin with each piece. I typically draw on my iPad and then move onto the canvas. Once the imagery begins to come together I start to understand to mood of the painting. This comes from both visual imagery and external information like what I am listening to in the studio. Seventeen feels vibrant and energetic to me, like a young romance.
My work predominantly explores the theme of memory while expressing an interest in domestic spaces and our connection to the physical and virtual places we inhabit. The work integrates this theme while reflecting on personal experiences. The gathering of visual information is an influence from “the everyday”, whether it be from those physical or virtual spaces. Moons cut out of window shutters, the way a house is painted in two competing colors, squiggles as if doodles on a sheet of loose leaf; my interest in how the physical world influences our memories and ideas of the past informs how I create paintings. This produces a new object or image that is similar to something familiar, but ultimately unknown. This duality is reminiscent of how we experience memory. Something feels familiar but is ultimately inaccessible in its entirety. This experience is shared among all people, and I believe in creating with the hope to reveal how much our lived experience and art are connected.More About Artist
