This piece is wheel-thrown in two sections, then altered by cutting and folding while the clay is still malleable. The matte sections are a layering of three underglazes which are then sanded to reveal the strata of vibrant colors. The glossy sections are my own cone 6 glazes which provide contrast to the signature matte sections.
I work primarily on the wheel, taking functional shapes the wheel is obligated to make, and alter them by cutting, folding to take them into the realm of sculpture. Surface decoration plays a major part finishing the work; there is extensive use of underglazes that are layered and sanded, as well as the use of masking to allow the incorporation of imagery into the piece.More About Artist
