Meseta Sequence: Fuente de Praotore

This painting, entitled, Meseta Sequence: Fuente de Praotore is part of a series of approximately 40 paintings that were inspired by a 500 mile walk by the artist on the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. Fuente is Spanish for fountain. The painting is titled after a stopping place on the Camino where ancient pilgrims could get water on their journey. This painting was featured in Studio Visit Magazine Vol. 43. The Meseta Sequence series is painted in thick smooth surfaced acrylic with layers of color- much in the same way layers of color and material predominate ancient architectural surfaces and landscapes Spain. The paintings become a record of action and process which includes the deckled edges and the stripping away of layers. This painting currently includes a frame.

STATEMENT

My work is an assemblage observations, influences, and ideas- whether it is painting or sculpture. For the past forty years, I have had to contend with the bifurcation between the two. I see no difference between them since they are derived from the same sources. The work simply becomes a brief record of action, improvisation, intent, combined with the constant impulse to build or construct in two or three-dimensional space. As I work, I try not to concern myself with what the work is. My concerns extend to its context, the time and space in which it exists, and how it will be created through a process of trial and error which leads to evolution rather than finality.
