This oil painting depicts the surreal, ancient hot springs of Pamukkale, with a vintage Turkish rug pattern carefully composed in the sky. Three figures tentatively make their way across the watery landscape, in futuristic air-filtering suits. I spent three months in various areas of Turkey in 2014, and often dream of returning. One of many treasured experiences was simply frequenting the weekly market for several weeks in Datça. The street stalls overflowed with stunning displays of exotic vegetables, figs, dates, local citrus and pomegranate, spices, fresh olives and cheeses. I learned more about genuine hospitality and the kindness of strangers in Turkey, which inspires me to this day.

STATEMENT
The landscape paintings were born from my lengthy travels, with patterns inspired by the tapestries of the cultures inhabiting the landscapes depicted. Studying the weavings and rugs I reference continually teaches me about the many layers of symbolism behind the shapes, colors, and repetition in patterns. The gradients, oil pastel drawings come entirely from within, capturing fleeting moments and are entirely emotion-based. With them, I seek to aesthetically soothe the anxiety we can all experience, and provide a moment of calm to rest ones eyes. The portraits of my friends, and fellow artists Samah and Aya are an ongoing series dedicated to celebrating various people in my life and their cultural backgrounds. I'm happy to accept portrait commissions, reach out for further info.
