This artwork, made collaboratively by R&D (Diane Rosenblum and Joe Doyle), extends the bounds of abstract painting, using computer based manipulation to push, pull and warp the picture plane. R&D paintings make viewers want to reach out and touch the canvas to see if what their eyes tell them is real. These colorful paintings are a new development in abstraction, bringing the illusionary world of computer-derived space to hard-edge painting. R&D artworks intrigue and delight people with their stripes that buldge, ripple, and twist subtly encourage new ways of thinking and being. The title, Atkins, is after the 19th century botanist and photographer Anna Atkins. The central blue of this piece resembles the deep, almost mystical blues of Atkin's cyanotypes of plants and seaweed. Like Atkins in her time, R&D uses cutting edge technology to make new dynamic images.
