Petroglyph and Gears Shield: Industrial Evolution
Wheel thrown, then reversed and trimmed, I use what is normally considered the outside of the piece the surface to pattern. There are hints of the gears, petroglyphs, but less prominent than others in the series. This is mainly because of how the ash glaze beads and drips. The Ash section is surrounded by areas that have been layered with various underglazes, then masked with a repeating pattern, and lastly sanded prior to firing at cone 6.
STATEMENT
I work primarily on the wheel, taking functional shapes the wheel is obligated to make, and alter them by cutting, folding to take them into the realm of sculpture. Surface decoration plays a major part finishing the work; there is extensive use of underglazes that are layered and sanded, as well as the use of masking to allow the incorporation of imagery into the piece.
