An open gate beckons. Passing through it into an unknown space is a delightful adventure into possibility. It takes a bit of courage to venture in, but it could be exactly the right decision. Gateway is based on a picture taken at the Palace of Versailles in France. The rustic fences enclosed many outdoor "rooms" where the trees and bushes grew as they liked. They seemed to be places with the potential for mystery, privacy, and seclusion in the middle of the otherwise highly cultivated gardens. As a teenager, I read quite a lot of historical fiction set at Versailles. These spaces were just the kind of place I would have loved to disappear with a good book for an afternoon, where, hopefully, no one could find me. Decades later, the idea still appeals. Please note that this work is currently on display at the Artist as Quiltmaker and will not be available until mid-July 2022.

STATEMENT

Walking into a fabric store as a child, I would run my hand over all the bolts of fabric as I passed them. That love of texture has never left me. Over time I have expressed that love as a garment maker, then a quilter, and now as a textile artist. I'm never happier or more at peace than when I'm creating and stitching. My current work explores the intersection of drama and serenity through the use of line. I'm fascinated by trying to find out how much I can distill and take away while continuing to convey the essence of my subject or idea. I often work in black and white which further assists in keeping the focus on line.
