STATEMENT
Trained in product design at Georgia Tech and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Shayla Johnson specializes in minimalist line drawings and watercolor paintings to create contemporary patterns that bring everyday products to life. She has been serving as a maker and textile designer in Detroit for 6 years. Her passion is creating hand printed art and textiles that are used to make stylish and unique home decor and accessories. In 2013 she started Scarlet Crane Creations to create high-quality products featuring screen-printed sentiments, contemporary minimalist illustrations and pattern design. Scarlet Crane Creations is located in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood of Detroit, offering a variety of DIY screen printing workshops along with handmade goods that are also available in local retail stores. The product line includes tea towels, throw pillows, baskets, bags, scarves and wall art also produced along with cut and sew partners here in Detroit. A few of the collections also celebrate the architecture and landscape of Detroit. In the past year, Scarlet Crane Creations has expanded to printing fabric yardage for makers and designers and most recently printed the fabric for the “Hope for Flowers” collection of world-renowned designer, Tracy Reese.
