Hand appliquéing one curve each day during sixty days of our COVID-19 lockdown was my Bedrock of Calm during this unprecedented time. While the world was turning upside down, spending an hour a day away from the alarming news helped me cope with the changes and challenges of our new world. This work is part of my Grifology series about symbols, making marks and a daily practice. As I completed each day’s curve, I added it to the growing pile and did not look at it again. At the end of the sixty days, it was exciting to take them out and see how similar and different they are. The blocks are sewn in chronological order. Please note that this work is currently at Art Quilt Elements – it will be available in May 2022.
Walking into a fabric store as a child, I would run my hand over all the bolts of fabric as I passed them. That love of texture has never left me. Over time I have expressed that love as a garment maker, then a quilter, and now as a textile artist. I’m never happier or more at peace than when I’m creating and stitching.
My current work explores the intersection of drama and serenity through the use of line. I’m fascinated by trying to find out how much I can distill and take away while continuing to convey the essence of my subject or idea. I often work in black and white which further assists in keeping the focus on line.
