STATEMENT
I am a visual explorer. Explore the potential. Engage your soul. Escape reality. This succinctly describes my artistic philosophy and why photography is my passion. My images celebrate quotidian life and ranges from vibrant contemplative abstracts, to fine art, and interpretive/documentary portraits of landscapes. The use of natural lighting and environmental factors adds a sense of emotional drama and often elicits creative interpretations that are contemplative, offering more than “just a pretty picture”. My sparks of creative inspiration come from other art forms and a variety of sources like observing the design performance of a glass blower, or most likely just a walk in the woods. Overall I strive to make a visceral connection with the viewer; a visual conversation within the frame. My signature style tends to evoke an elegant simplicity of design, oftentimes with a layer of complexity that hovers behind the façade. I embrace the solitude of nature, capture the common and unique, and reveal the wonderment to convey imagery that transcends the ordinary.
BIO
Joanne Scherf is native Detroiter and international award-winning visual explorer of contemplative imagery, creating ethereal and abstract images that convey an emotional expression. Upon reflection her childhood gift of a Brownie camera was a pivotal point in the beginning of Joanne’s creative journey.
Though overlooked as a career option, Joanne took up photography later in life as she immersed herself in college courses, workshops and master classes with well-known photographers.
Her awards come from International Color Awards, Black & White Magazine, COLOR Magazine, Black & White Spider, Neutral Density, PX3, Women in Photography International (WIPI), IPA, and Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers.
Joanne is also featured in professional photography journals such as Silvershotz: International Journal of Contemporary Photography and FOCUS Fine Art Magazine. A limited portfolio (as a 4-page spread, featured photographer in Silvershotz International Journal of Contemporary Photography) is located at select university and museum collections. Joanne’s work is also published in books, Seeing in Sixes (2016), and Our Magnificent Planet (2020).
