Artist accepts commissions.
I create ceramic sculptures. My focus and narrative with my work is to provoke thought about our surrounding world and our effect on our environment. I explore possibilities with clay. I hand build identifiable and abstract forms that are representative of our culture and natural environment. The world is all around us and this is my source for what I create. The objects I create make’s me more aware of our existence and effect on our world. My ceramics use vibrant color, pattern and whimsy often with an underlying content or message. Creating and distorting familiar objects with clay and other materials is similar to the human tendency to experience, impact, change our environment. Ceramics is a material that can last for a very long time and this is important. My aim is to preserve the present cultural landscape for the future.
Multimedia artist Iggy Sumnik creates ceramic sculptures. Sumnik received his BFA from Detroit’s Wayne State University in 2004. Sumnik completed a three-year commitment as assistant to artist Jun Kaneko Studio in 2008. Since then, he maintains his own studio, in Omaha and now in Detroit as well.
