BIO

Gwendolyn Roth’s photography has been exhibited extensively in the southeast Michigan area, receiving numerous awards along the way. She also has had the honor of several solo and group exhibitions. She is primarily self-taught. Her initial interest in photography sparked on her twelfth birthday when she received her first point and shoot camera. She worked and saved and finally purchased her first serious 35mm camera at age sixteen.

Michigan born but New England raised, Gwendolyn grew up in an art-inspired family. She returned to the mid-west to attend Michigan State University, earning her undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture, subsequently practicing in that design field. Marriage and the arrival of her first child rekindled her passion for photography as she created a vast collection of family photos. Her husband's career took them to Europe for several years, where she amassed thousands more photographs of her family's time there - a self-imposed travel photography program, with husband and now two babies in tow! These experiences taught Gwendolyn to see and compose quickly.

Ultimately raising three children and finding herself at a cross-road, photography answered Gwendolyn’s next most vexing question: now what? She jumped back into the world of photography headfirst, embracing the enlightening transition from film to digital. Hard work, perseverance and determination de-mystified digital photography and its ensuing technology, although it does continue to task her from time to time with its ever changing codes.

Gwendolyn’s work emphasizes fine art and healing art, but she will photograph anything that catches her eye. Her key inspiration relies on uplifting and encouraging perspectives of everyday life. Sometimes she has fun with the camera just for the sake of fun, but she still strives for thoughtful results. She works in both monochrome and color. Some shots are painstakingly set up, others are off the fly. Some shots are taken miles and miles away, others are taken in her own backyard. She works with any kind of light available (she is especially fond of back light). Her challenge is to make it work.

Total immersion in photography defines Gwendolyn’s role as an artist while she explores an endless evolution of technique and subject. She looks forward to a future filled with photography.
