Throughout my entire life I have been interested in how my sense of an absolute abstract source connects with my life in the continuum of time and space. The intersection between the ultimate and the relative realities produces a zone of uncertainty and potential. My art work is inspired by and investigates this zone.
Dana Zed grew up outside Washington DC and moved to San Francisco in 1980 after graduation from Brown University. She began working at Magic Glass in the mission where she built 6’ glass display cases. She took this skill, bought a kiln and began experimenting with fusing and kiln casting glass. Dana made glass and mixed media sculptures and had solo shows with these at Braunstein/Quay Gallery in SF for over a decade. Zed also completed an 11’ x 20’ glass screen installation with the San Fransisco Arts Commission for the Portola Library. She rented her work to Bill Graham and had pieces in the dressing rooms of Pink Floyd and Sting. She made sets for 3 dance performances with glass and other media and was part of Tracy Rhoades Gerbode grant. She was a SECA SFMOMA 2nd place finalist (back in the day when only one person got the award). She taught at Esalen Institute for over a decade and there installed 5 permanent sculptures. Zed began drawing people on the subway on the 2”square iPod touch and this work was awarded a month long residency at The de Young museum. This extended to teaching workshops at Pixar and being the digital artist at all the David Hockney events at The de Young’s Hockney “Bigger Exhibition” show. After the digital prints, Dana became interested in traditional etchings and produced etchings of birds which are included in the city of Berkeley’s art collection. Dana ’s work is also included in the collections of the Oakland Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Takoma Museum. Currently Dana is painting and printmaking. She also teaches in her studio.
