STATEMENT
I've been a photographer for over 40 years and have been showing my photo art for almost as long. I shot B/W when I was starting out. Over the years I moved to color film and now I shoot digitally. My style has changed over the years as well. From bold and graphic to a more traditional pictorial style.
The one thing that hasn't changed, my art photography is my escape from the work-a-day world of commercial photography. I'm able to photograph what I find interesting or inspiring, instead of trying to capture someone else' vision.

BIO
Bill Gemmell is a commercial freelance photographer with over 40 years' experience working on location, in the studio, in the darkroom (both traditional and Adobe Photoshop), as well as teaching Introduction, Black and White, and Advanced Photography part time at Macomb Community College since 2010. His career started as staff photographer for the Dearborn Times-Herald Newspaper in 1979.
Bill started showing his work in 1981 when he was included in the Detroit Photo Gallery "Inaugural Exhibition" May of that year. Since then his work has appeared in more than 50 exhibitions and juried shows.
He moved to New York City in 1982 and continued showing his work including a solo show at Ringo Restaurant on Manhattan's upper west side, the 69th Hudson River Annual at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York, and the Absolute Artist Series. Bill was a member of the Washington Heights Art Association and appeared in several outdoor shows as well as their International Gallery's "3rd Anniversary Show and Mixed Media Expressionist Exhibition".
After returning to the Detroit area in 1993, Bill's first appearance was in the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Association's "Michigan Fine Arts Competition". Since then his work has been in many juried shows throughout the metro area including the Detroit Artist Market where he's been a member since 2011.
