What is Fine Art Renting?

Understanding the Rental Process

Fine art renting involves paying a repeated reduced rate for a limited time. You don’t own the artwork, but you can install and showcase it in your location for months or years. The rental agreement defines the pricing, scope, duration, and location for the artworks. Because you are renting the fine art, you’re able to bring variety and diversity to your workplace or corporate property because the artwork will be replaced every few months or years. With the replacements, there is an extra cost including curation, the artwork rental fee, shipping, insurance and installations.

How Art Rentals Works

When you rent artwork, you pay a monthly fee + extra fees for the right to display the art for a specific amount of time. The terms of the agreement will include the fees, how long the artwork is rented for and the property the artwork is installed in. You do not own the piece itself and you must have the proper insurance to cover protecting the artworks you rent. In addition, not all artists will allow their work to be rented and not all artwork types should be rented.

What is Original Fine Art?

Understanding Original Fine Art

An original artwork is a one-of-a-kind creation made thoughtfully by a professional artist. When you buy original art, you purchase the physical piece for display and that work stays in your possession. Ownership of original art gives you exclusive rights to the piece, making it unique to you although the artist still owns the copyright, meaning you cannot physically change the artwork.

How Purchasing Original Fine Art Works

When you purchase fine art, it’s a one-time payment paid to an art consultant, a gallery or the artist themselves. The retail price varies depending on the artist’s reputation, artwork size, and the medium used. Purchasing an artwork gives you ownership of the piece, but the artist retains the copyright. The quality artwork purchased can be passed down for generations.

Cost Comparison: Renting Art vs. Purchasing Originals

Art Renting: Lower Cost for Use

Renting fine artwork is generally a more cost-effective option if you need artwork for a limited time or do not want to commit to investing in an art collection. Renting fine art offers a more affordable way to display high-quality pieces and payments are required monthly. The cost usually includes the artwork curation, the artwork rental fee, delivery, and installation. Plus, the renter must purchase enough insurance needed to cover the artwork rented. The overall cost varies depending on the artist and the terms of the agreement. Not all artists will agree to rent their work and not all artwork should be rented.

Original Fine Art: Investing in Art and Artists

Buying original art is an exciting investment. Artwork prices vary based on the artist’s prestige, artwork dimensions, and medium. Though more expensive than renting artwork, you are building a fine art collection that can be handed down through multiple generations and you are investing in our art community in a larger way. In addition, you’re saving time because you don’t have to replace the artwork every few years.

Exclusivity: Renting vs. Originals

Art Rentals: Limited Exclusivity

Renting fine artwork provides the client variety and diversity because their rented art will be replaced every so often. Multiple businesses or individuals can often rent the same limited edition (printed) pieces, meaning you won’t be the only displaying the work. The artwork you rent is not yours. You do not own it and it must be returned or replaced at the end of the contract. This can be great for businesses who want to change up their fine art enhancements but it will also mean paying for curation, new rentals, shipping and installation every time the artwork is edited.

Original Art: Full Ownership

When you buy original art, although the artist keeps their copyright, the artwork is yours for generations, making it unique to your art collection. You save time and ultimately money by building a fine art collection by purchasing the original artwork.

Terms and Flexibility: Renting Fine Art vs. Purchasing Original Artwork

Art Rentals: Flexible and Diverse

Fine art rental agreements can be set up for specific time periods – from three months to years. They can be tailored to suit your needs, allowing flexibility in terms of duration, and location. This option works well for businesses who want to display art for a specific amount of time then replace it with a new piece. Fine art rentals provide with budget-friendly flexibility and diversity. Although many artists do not rent their artwork, Embrace Creatives has a long list of vetted artists who work with in our fine art rental program.

Original Fine Art: More Control, Fewer Restrictions

When you purchase original fine art it becomes part of your permanent art collection and can be passed down through generations or gifted to employees that retire. Buying fine art means you do not have to constantly curate new pieces for the same wall or floor, which can be time consuming and cost money. When you purchase fine art, you buy it to last for years, not months.

Which Option Is Right for You?

We Suggest Art Renting if:

  • You want flexibility and diversity and you don’t mind having new art curated every few months or years.
  • You want to swap artwork out every six months or so.
  • You want fine art in your workplace but your budget is lower than it would take to purchase fine art outright.

We Suggest Purchasing Original Fine Art if:

  • You want to own a unique, one-of-a-kind piece that can be passed down for generations.
  • You’re focused on creating a signature look with exclusive, original fine art.
  • You’re willing to invest in long-term value and in the local art community.
  • You consider the art as an investment over time.
